Knights and Vagabonds

This week it's been a return to painting normal models over scenery (I've got plenty more to do though so stay tuned) First up, some Stormcast Knights. I fancied painting something different and just for fun. Since I'd bought these lot on the cheap back in January, now seemed like a good time to finish them up. Conversion wise it's mainly head and weapon swaps to make the group look a bit more traveled. They've collected trophies from hunts or been gifted tokens by grateful peasants for what we assume are suitably heroic deeds, but it's the freehand work on the shields I'm most proud of.

I'll paint up a few more of these guys and use them in Warcry if I can persuade any of my house hold to play. But in the mean time, I've carried on the dark fantasy vibe and painted up some cultists.

These will be for a Mordheim warband with hopes to use them in a campaign later this year. I still have to paint up the rest of the gang first.

Water Features

This week I finished off the river and started lock-down. Yes, everyone's feeling the effects and I'm no different. I'll keep my posting fairly regular, but I have time at last it seems to get plenty of arty things finished until I go back to work. For now, enjoy...

The bridge is from TTcombat's Venice range. Last thing I bought before my FLGS got locked down.

Looking forward to getting some games in with this as well. Luckily I'm in a shared house with people that know the hobby. I've also vowed to paint up all the Sigmarines I got with Mortal Realms. now seems a good a time as any so here's the WIP on my first three.

Chaotic Real-Estate

Warcry's release was a long time ago no, but I've finished the scenery I got with starter box. This stuff was a joy to play about with. That said, SO MANY SKULLS!

I through my Iron Golems into the pictures just to populate the place for a bit.

The bell tower is still my favourite piece of the whole set.

I've also started work on some new homemade scenery. If the rain stops again I'll get some paint on my new river before I go back to work.

Here's a little WIP of a ferry barge to go with the dock.

Back To The Streets

I Decided to have a little fun this week with some kit bashing. I've amassed a pretty big collection of random sprues from all over the place, not just GW products but historical and alternative fantasy stuff like Oathmark or Forgotten Worlds. No reason for getting them initially, just hording instincts I think.

Any who, some time last year I built and painted a Witch Hunter crew for Mordheim/Frostgrave and this time seemed about right to build them some suitable adversaries. I sold my previous Cult of the Possessed for funds and because I wasn't using them for anything. This new batch of Daemon worshiping nutters presented me with some cool ideas and an opportunity to play around with spare parts.

Here are the completed builds with all the greenstuff laid bare. I'll be looking to paint them up slowly over the next few months. Who knows, I may even get a game with them at some point.

The Possessed beasty in the center of this picture was a pain to get right, but has become one of my favourite bits of the crew. His head was making him top heavy, but I was so set on the idea for the finished model I didn't want to abandon it. He's held down with a penny though I think a larger base may have served me better.

It was a massive effort of will not to lose myself on the beastmen. It became tempting to just build a whole warband of these guys and forget the cult all together.

As I said, Painting these will be a future project over the next few months, but C&C on the builds is very welcome.

A Look At Ancient Architecture

Following on from something a friend said to me last week about scenery never getting done to the same time scales as normal miniatures, I set out to make a point and finish off my Warcry scenery. To be fair, he was quite right, these ruins have been sat in the conservatory waiting to be finished for weeks and I can't use the storms as an excuse as all the necessary spray painting was done before the first gusts of wind hit British shores.

So I decided to get stuck in, admittedly I still have to paint the barricades to complete the set, but I have another scenery related project that needs my attention before the end of the month.

The majority of this set was done with spray paint, with lighter shades dusted over the tops to get the larger areas of colour onto the models, then washes, dry brushes and details were added by hand afterwards. First up the stone head. One the most interesting bits of scenery GW has ever put out.
The bell tower is hands down, my favourite piece of scenery that I own at the moment so it's a personal satisfaction to have it completed.

The Wells were another cool touch to the Warcry set. Just a small detail that really adds a sense that these ruins used to be part of everyday life before it all went horribly wrong.

For the water effects, I painted the bones as normal and the inside of the well dark brown. Then I just poured in a little PVA, tilted it around into all the gaps and left it to dry. The pictures aren't too great, but the effects look great in person in my opinion.

And there you have it. As I said earlier, a more pressing project for our groups Lord of the Rings campaign is taking the lead right now. I'll have posts about that another time, but the barricades to finish off this set won't take long. I'm really keen to get some use out of these soon, Warcry ideally, but I'd love to play Mordheim or Frostgrave just for the nostalgia. Just need to get an opponent round for drinks.
