A Sneaky Proof of Concept

Following on from the Retro Snakebites and the Goffs before them, it's time for next stage of the great Oldhammer Ork project. This time I'm doing a Blood Axe Clan, something a risky choice currently as 40k is a few months from it's 10th Edition rules release and the sneaky tactics of the Blood Axes are unlikely to play too well during these early stages. That said, when have I ever worried about using sub-optimal armies. Here are a few pics of the first finished Orks and some Grots for good measure.

Once again, I'm limiting the pallet slightly so the Clans will all look like a single army when set up together, but the big change for these lads is the use of Blood Axe camo patterns. Nothing too in depth as this is going to appear on every model, including the vehicles, so I want to keep it as simple as possible.

I've got plenty more to work on before the army makes the table, but I hope to get at least a playable force done in time for 10th. For now, here are some work-in-progress shots of the Kommandos and the Warboss.

GHOULS!!!

Just a short post this time about a pack of old school Ghouls I've been neglecting for quite some time.

These brutal little beggars wrap up my Mordhiem Undead Warband, so I'll take some group shots at some point.

Wasteland Gets City Hall

I've been sprucing up some of my Wasteland Settlement scenery lately, adding a few posters and fixing some minor ware and tare from gaming. During the fixings, I dug out a building kit from TTcombat that I bought ages ago and decided to build it over the bank holiday weekend. To my shock, this thing turned out to be huge. I expected it to act as a bar or a small hall but the damn thing is almost as big as the Ork fort. Understand, these are not complaints, but it was a shock during construction.

Anyways, here are a few pictures of the finished Scrap Town City Hall/Drinking Hole. The posters have become my favourite thing on scenery lately and this building alone is a fantastic example for why. A few scruffy bits of paper and glue and the build (heck the whole town at the time of writing) has gained so much character.

Here are few action shots for size comparisons.

Looking ahead, I purchased some MDF walls to use in Boarding Action games and Necromunda. Really looking forward to giving them a similar treatment.

Deff Metal Boyz

Once again, back painting some greenskins, this time a few Kruelboyz for Warcry. Unlike my hyper cartoony style for my retro 40K orks, these ladz have been given a bit more of a muted palette for a change.

I was somewhat intimidated by these models. Not sure if it was the style or the fact I didn't quite know how to go about getting the grungy scavenger look that I had in mind. I knew I wanted the big shields to be a focus point for the group so they would be done in a much more contrasting set of colours versus the more earthy tones of the orcs

I'm painting up a few characters and I need to finish off the sculpting for the hobgoblins, but so far this little band of savages has been rather enjoyable. There is a part of me that wants to build an AoS army, but so far I'm fighting that urge on the grounds I don't like Age of Sigmars current rules. Nothing against anyone who does, but I've tried a few times to get into it with my Goblins and I can't quite get excited about it. My buddy is eager to try and learn with his Khorne Deamons so maybe I'll give it another go sometime.

Dirty Goblin Feet

Something I've been working on. My gaming group have been playing a casual Warcry campaign recently and I been using my Orruk Kruelboyz. Been a lot of fun and has spurred me to get the boyz painted as my next project. On the side lines, I started rummaging in my bits box and found all the spare Hobgrot bodies from the kit. Most of these could be finished into complete models with some armour and filler on the torsos, but the biggest step to get these half-a-models finished would be to sculpt some legs as all of the spare torsos only had the one.

It's been a while since I did any major sculpting work like this and it's been a great bit of practice for sculpting feet. Things turned out really well I think. Obviously I need to get the rest of the models done, but C&C is always appreciated.

Sneaky Sneaking

I've been a bit all over the place this last month, nothing too stressful, but limited hobby time. More time playing than painting for a change. That said I was able to get a few small bits done. Namely this stealthy duo.

I'm still mucking about with the fluorescent paints I got for Xmas. I need some more practice to get to grips with them. I tried out the green on the Callidus's blade and gun. The Blade looks ok, but I think the gun looks a bit off. I also tried out some red on the eyes for both assassins, it looks pretty good, but it's obviously turned a bit pink when you look too closely.

The plan is to have one of these stab monkeies included with my Imperial Fists army just to add some extra flavour. That's it for now. Until next time.

The Glorious (Not Quite) Dead

A quick follow up post to my Into The West write up. Here are a few more pictures of the Rohan army I took to the event. The project as a whole isn't quite done. I still have a couple more named heroes to paint (Eowyn for one) and more infantry.
To start with, this army was a junk lot I got on the cheap. It was in pretty bad shape and I had to gather some extra parts for repairs. All the spears were replaced with steel ones and every plastic horse had to have it's ankle fixed, not to mention the paint stripping stage. The Royal Guard were bought second hand from a mate that was down sizing his collection, but Gamling is the only model that was bought brand new. Apparently that banner is quite good in game.
Gamling was the difficult bit for this army. I had to free-hand the same banner, BOTH SIDES, twice. Looks good in my humble opinion, but it isn't something I'm eager to repeat.

One last note on the tournament. Everyone attending got a couple of freebies; a dragon hatchling and 1" widget. Both of these are going to get some use, I'll have the dragon done as an objective marker.

Back to painting some marines for a bit. I have a deadline to meet in march and the latest points update only increased my work load for it. Bet get on with it :)
